Black and white love

Dear all, 

Unlike several songs of வாலி, that were commonly mistaken to be Kannadasan’s – the song I picked this week represents quint essential Vaali. It is often cited as being one amongst his noteworthy ones. 

I wanted to highlight this song for several reasons: 

  1. It’s a energetic song that exudes love and brings in cheer everytime I hear. 
  2. Although mistaken for a MSV composition, the music is composed by V.Kumar an accomplished composer by his own right. 
  3. K. Balachander picturises this black and white song in absolute black and white. The background almost always is pitch black with characters and lighting providing for scattered whites. The lighting, constume, props and the angles capture the stark contrast elegantly – an ingenious effort.
  4. Vaali’s lyrics sit on the tune perfectly and capture the jolly mood flawlessly. The song is from the movie “எதிர் நீச்சல்”. 

The song uniquely starts with two pallavies one for the hero and one for the heroine. The accordion that precedes the Pallavi sets the easy mood. Vaali uses rhyming words to end each sentence    (எதுகை) that are different for each of the pallavis to show differentiation between the characters.

எத்தனை வண்ணங்கள்…

முத்தமாய் சிந்தும்போது

பொங்கிடும் எண்ணங்கள்

Fantastic lyrics: 

தேன்மலர்க் கிண்ணங்கள் (a bowl formed by the petals of the nectar filled flower -beautiful imagination)

எத்தனை வண்ணங்கள்…(shades associated with emotions revealed by the face – blush pink, blue indicating shyness etc). 

Now the Pallavi for the heroine: 

மாலையில் சந்தித்தேன்

மையலில் சிந்தித்தேன்

மங்கை நான் கன்னித்தேன்

காதலன் தீண்டும் போது

கைகளை மன்னித்தேன்…

Vaali introduces us to a lovely new tamil word “மையல்”. Although it has several meanings, the apt one for this song would either be “infatuated or a confused state of mind”. The Pallavi conveys how quickly things happened – “மாலையில் சந்தித்தேன்

மையலில் சிந்தித்தேன்”. Soon after fell in love. Then a very romantic and poetic end to the Pallavi – “காதலன் தீண்டும் போது

கைகளை மன்னித்தேன்…”. 

The charanams have a wonderful lyrics that go with their சந்தம்: 

கொத்து மலர்க்குழல் பாதமளந்திடும் சித்திரமோ…

முத்து நகை தரும் மெல்லிய செவ்விதழ் ரத்தினமோ…( Clever use of the phrase “முத்து நகை” by Vaali – here implying “pearl white smile” – follows with the word  “ரத்தினமோ” – to imply a dual meaning that her smile is a precious jewel overall; the description “மெல்லிய செவ்விதழ்” is special)

To not say and still convey the message is an art. Vaali ends the Charanam with lovely lines that express the intimacy very subtly. 

துயில் கொண்ட வேளையிலே…

குளிர் கண்ட மேனியிலே

துணை வந்து சேரும்போது…சொல்லவோ இன்பங்கள் 

The next Charanam is equally impressive, mirroring the first in its சந்தம்: 

ஆளிலை மேலொரு கண்ணனைப் போலவன் வந்தவனோ…

நூலிடை மேலொரு நாடகமாடிட நின்றவனோ…

சுமை கொண்ட பூங்கொடியின்

சுவை கொண்ட தேன்கனியை

உடை கொண்டு மூடும்போது…உறங்குமோ உன்னழகு

A rare duet by P.B. Srinivas and P. Suseela – rendered without too much fuss adds to the realism. 

A song that substantiates the title வாலிப வாலி spotlessly.
