WALTZ in the park

Dear all,

This week selected a song that was way ahead of its time in every aspect. Picked a song from the movie “குழந்தையும் தெய்வமும்”  – selected this over the more popular song from the same movie “அன்புள்ள மான் விழியே” for its sheer novelty and soothing melody. The song is about a couple reminiscing their falling for each other, relishing each other’s company and the joy the evening together brings about.

Several things make this song so enchanting and delightful:

  1. MSV’s music is out of the world. MSV uses a western rhythm throughout that sounds like a waltz, but the tune is of an usual Indian style – a very novel attempt and the first of its kind.
  2. It is common for the hero or a heroine to sing playing a piano, but in this song neither use a piano but MSV lavishly employs the piano throughout,  to blend the rhythm and the strings – just pure brilliance.
  3. Humming done by MSV at the beginning and the interludes alone make this song worth listening to. The humming at the start just seduces you and captivates your mind.
  4. P. Suseela uniquely sings in a L.R. Easwari like style making the song a smooth flowing one that caresses us like a gentle breeze in an evening park.
  5. The cast exude youth and drip romance. Jamuna Rani is so beautiful and Jaishankar is charming.
  6. Lyrics by வாலி – as always simple but highly effective and in this case very idyllic. There is beauty, poetry and the lines sit so well in the tune.

The song starts with piano starting the rhythm and strings follow soon after. MSV then mesmerises us with his humming – he was unianimously voted by producers AVM and the director to sing this humming- now we know why!!. Simultaneously the waltz rhythm starts and the piano builds the tempo.

Now it’s vaali’s turn to enthrall us. Pallavi starts with the female lead singing:

Vaali shows his true class in these deeply romantic lines. On quick look they don’t impress you – but you contemplate for a few moments and the beauty reveals itself:

Eyes are the only senses that wander out and away from the body and then relay the sensation to us – the other senses sense only when the stimuli reaches them. Vaali brings this out poetically. She couldn’t resist eyeing him when he was even far off and then her eyes were glued to him, tracking him every step as he comes closer – the focal length gets shorter and shorter as if the eyes pull him closer to her. Vaali describes this so romantically when he says “உன்னை என்னருகே..,கொண்டு வந்ததற்கு”.

Then uses அடுக்கு சொற்கள் effectively to fit the waltz rhythm and the immense excitement. Slowly (மெல்ல, மெல்ல) letting herself slip away into oblivion – elegantly expressed – “நானும், மெல்ல, மெல்ல..,என்னை,மறப்பதென்ன..”.  The humming after the pallavi is jumpy like the music – resembling their minds.

MSV just melts your heart away with his voice making you want to fall in love right away.

In the first charanam, she teases him and also expresses her inability to resist him. Vaali rocks again with his eloquence subtly bringing about the intimacy between a newly married couple – விரசம்இல்லாத ரசம்!!!:

Don’t miss the brief single guitar start in the second interlude – then piano takes over dominating and controlling the tempo. The second charanam continues their romance into the pleasant evening:

Equally effective lyrics that describe their falling in love : “முதல் நாள்.., ஒருபார்வையில்..,வரவழைத்தாய்..,

“If music is a drug, I am delighted to be high always” – Read this somewhere but relate to it today listening to this – the song leaves us high craving for more.
