Utopia – கற்பனை நல்லுலகம்

Often great poets augur grand thoughts. What seems impossible seems very possible in their imagination. Exaggeration and grandeur are often used to embellish their viewpoints.

Can an ideal world (Utopia) exist? If so what does it feel like? By definition “utopia” exists only in imagination. Each of us will have our own idea of Utopia – Our perceptions, wishes and desires filling its entirety for most part. But how do illustrious poets envision it?

கம்பன் and பாரதி were huge inspirations for கண்ணதாசன்.
கண்ணதாசன் கம்பதாசனும் கூட!!!
Many a times he has acknowledged how learning a few hundred songs of கம்பராமாயணம் has been the foundation of his movie song writing. Similarly he was profoundly influenced by பாரதி. Let’s see how he uses his inspirations to pen his version of Utopia.

First quoting கம்பன்: when referring to Ayodhya he makes it sound like THE utopian city one would want to live in:
“வண்மை இல்லை, ஓர் வறுமை இன்மையால்;
திண்மை இல்லை, ஓர் செறுநர் இன்மையால்;
உண்மை இல்லை, பொய் உரை இலாமையால்;
வெண்மை இல்லை, பல் கேள்வி மேவலால்”

(வண்மை – Generosity (கொடை) doesn’t exist since there is no one poor;
திண்மை (Courage) doesn’t exist since there are no enemies(செறுநர்);
வெண்மை (Ignorance – akin to the phrase “drawing a blank” doesn’t exist since everyone is inquisitive and thirsty for knowledge).

Next பாரதியின் வரிகள்:
“முத்து குளிப்பதொரு தென்கடலிலே
மொய்த்து வணிகர் பல நாட்டினர் வந்தே
நாட்டி நமக்கினிய பொருள் கொணர்ந்தே
நம்மருள் வேண்டுவதும் மேர்கரையிலே”
(நம்மருள் – “They seek our favour and patronage” – so beautifully expressing his pride and vision)

Having taken in all these songs, Kannadasan used them for a song in a movie produced by himself.
Movie: கருப்பு பணம்
சீர்காழி கோவிந்தராஜன் renders it without too much fuss keeping it simple so that the message is not camouflaged by the music and singing.

Kannadasan’s pallavi appears to be inspired by கம்பன்:
“எல்லாரும் எல்லாமும் பெற வேண்டும் – இங்கு
இல்லாமை இல்லாத நிலை வேண்டும்
வல்லான் பொருள் குவிக்கும் தனி உடமை – நீங்கி வரவேண்டும் திருநாட்டில் பொதுவுடமை”
(The beauty of தமிழ் – the word வல்லான் – an effective word for “mighty” or “powerful” or “elite”)

The next few lines of the song remind me of these words of பாரதி:
“நெஞ்சில் உரமும் இன்றி
நேர்மை திறனும் இன்றி
வஞ்சனை சொல்வாரடி கிளியே வாய்ச்சொல்லில் வீரரடி”

Kannadasan deploys this idea in his own style in the first Charanam:
“இருட்டில் மறைந்து கொள்ள விளக்கணைப்பார் – சிலர்
கிணற்றில் இருந்து கொண்டு உலகளப்பார்
நெருப்பை மடியில் வைத்து மறைத்திருப்பார் – அந்த
நீசரை யார் உலகில் பொறுத்திருப்பார்”

Yet another lovely word – நீசர் – roughly translates into “scum”.

The next paragraph again seems to be an extension of Bharathi’s words : தனி ஒருவனுக்கு உணவில்லை எனில் ஜகத்தினை அழித்திடுவோம்”

However, Kannadasan turns his sentences into positive ones:
“பாலென அழுவோர்க்குப் பால் தருவோம் – பசுங் கூழெனத் துடிப்போர்க்கு சோறிடுவோம்
தாயகம் காப்போரின் தாள் பணிவோம் – யாவும் தனக்கென நினைப்போரை சிறையிடுவோம்”
Profound lines brimming with compassion, patriotism and conviction.

Three exceptional poets, an unified dream, multiple visions, one language, but several flavours to savour!!!
