விறுவிறுப்பிரியா!!!!
Dear all,
Some songs just bring so much excitement and joy from the word go. Today is one such song from the movie Tik Tik Tik.
I love this song for several reasons:
- IR justs take you to another universe. What starts of as a classical Carnatic song with typical மிருதங்கம், கொன்னக்கோல் and singing finishes as a western song with very few remnants of the original Carnatic instruments. We talk about fusion music. This is just one merging and transforming into another.
- Raagam கரகரப்பிரியா is exploited so marvellously. The tempo keeps your heart racing for more – விறுவிறுப்பிரியா ஆனது!!!!
- KJY pulls off one of his best songs showing his versatility – being very religious in his Carnatic rendition and so casual in his other parts of the song – His “I love you” so smooth and fluent that it would be hard not to comply. The ease with which he switches modes – brilliant. Jency as a young singer gives a powerful performance.
- IR violin strings just tie you up and completely control your senses.
- Picturisation is so fresh even for today’s standards – brings out the irresistible attraction the two feel for each other and finally both of them succumbing to it inevitably.
- Thengai Srinivasan hardly appears for 30 seconds, but using his characteristic expressions brings in the necessary humour.
- Finally கண்ணதாசன் lyrics – “Is it really him or someone younger?” you wonder. Lines may sound too simple for his standards, but it is this ability of his to cater to the younger generation and still the keep lyrics interesting that impressed me. Words and phrases so youthful. Leaves you in awe.
The song starts with the man feeling the woman’s pulses and then mridangam and her சலங்கை beat in synchrony – denoting her racing heart.
Please note how after the ஜதி the கொன்னக்கோல் punctuates, not once but twice with three distinct beats – reflecting the movie title – டிக் டிக் டிக் !!!
The deliberately interspersed periods of silences adds to the thrill making your heart go faster in anticipation of what comes next – pure genius.
The lady sings his mind voice as the pallavi:
“பூ மலர்ந்திட நடமிடும் பொன்மயிலே
நின்றாடும் உன் பாதம் பொன்பாதம்
விழிகளால் இரவினை விடியவிடு”
What an imaginative line ?
“விழிகளால் இரவினை விடியவிடு”
(He doesn’t want the night to end and Dawn to arrive – he just wants the night brightly lit in the romantic sense – clarified by the reply she gives him in the next lines)
Now she answers to his request:
“நான் நடமிட
உருகிய திருமகனே”
The man now grasps the opportunity and expresses
“ஐ லவ் யூ ஐ லவ் யூ
ஐ லவ் யூ ஐ லவ் யூ ஐ லவ்
யூ ஐ லவ் யூ”
She then asks him:
“விழிகளில்
நிலவுகள் தெரிகிறதோ”
Listen to how IR switches to western instruments in the first interlude and metamorphoses classical to western masterfully.
The charanam then becomes a delightful light hearted conversation between the two:
“ஏன் இந்த கோபம்
யார் தந்த சாபம்
நீ மேடை மேகம்
ஏன் மின்னல் வேகம்”
Her reply:
“கெடுப்பானே
சிரிக்கின்ற பாவி
தடுத்தானே இது
என்ன நீதி”
She is giving him sleepless nights:
“உனக்காக எரிகின்ற ஜோதி
(Lights are on all night long)
இவன் இன்று உறங்காத ஜாதி
படுக்கையில் பாம்பு நெளியுது
தலையணை நூறு கிழியுது
நீ அணிகிற ஆடையில் ஒரு நூலென
தினம் நான் இருந்திட ச னி த ப ம
ப த னி”
Mridangam punctuates briefly and western beats take over slowly fading the mridangam away – one becomes the other. Violins caress you throughout.
“தேனாறு ஒன்று
நீராடும் இங்கே
பூமாலை ஒன்று
தோள் சேரும் இங்கே”
The next lines are the best in my opinion: Also note how each line is now sung half and half by both – they now complete and compliment each other:
“இலை ஆடை
உடுத்தாத பூக்கள்
செடி மீது சிரிக்கின்ற நாட்கள்”
“சுடசுட
ஆசை வருகுது
இவள் மனம்
தீயில் நனைகுது
போதையில் ஒரு
தாமரை மலர்
தான் உடைந்தது
ஏன் நடந்தது
ச னி த ப ம ப த னி “
They finish wondering what they both are feeling:
“விழிகளில் தெரிவது விடுகதையோ”
A song dripping with ebullience and delightful romance.
