திருக்குறள் காதல்

This week I picked a song not only because it is a very romantic, fast paced bubbly song, but also because it brings out a facet of திருக்குறள் that a lot of us are unaware of. Almost everyone instinctively knows that திருக்குறள் is a book about the moral, ethical and righteous ways of life. It is a book known for its universality and transcends religions and cultures unlike most other similar books.
This week’s song is –
“ ஒரு பெண்ணைப்பார்த்து நிலவை பார்த்தேன்” from the movie -தெய்வத்தாய் – composed by the great MSV and sung passionately by TMS. MGR acts with vigour, easily bringing in the energy that this song demands. வாலி, this time pens the lyrics, but goes to திருக்குறள் for his inspiration. திருக்குறள் inspiring a romantic song? Yes indeed.
The குறள் is divided grossly into three main divisions (முப்பால்) – each then subdivided into smaller இயல். The last division காமத்துப்பால் has a subdivision : “நலம்புனைந்துரைத்தல்” (நலம் புனைந்து உரைத்தல்) which broadly means ( “Appreciation of the good” – in this case “Appreciating her beauty”). Three Kurals form the crux of the pallavi of this song. Pallavi starts with MSV bongos setting the tempo and mood quickly for TMS to take over.
குறள் 1118: “மாதர் முகம்போல் ஒளிவிட வல்லையேல் காதலை வாழி மதி”
( If you can be as bright as my loved one’s face you too will be an object of my love)
“ஒரு பெண்ணைப்
பார்த்து நிலவைப் பார்த்தேன்
நிலவில் குளிரில்லை”
குறள் 1112: “மலர்காணின் மையாத்தி நெஞ்சே இவள்கண் பலர்காணும் பூவொக்கும் என்று”
(Dear heart, Since her eyes resemble the bright flowers many see, you seem to get mesmerised by those flowers)
“அவள் கண்ணைப்
பார்த்து மலரைப் பார்த்தேன்
மலரில் ஒளியில்லை”
குறள் 1124 – This குறள் is from “காதற்சிறப்புரைத்தல்” :
“வாழ்தல் உயிர்க்கன்னள் ஆயிழை சாதல்
அதற்கன்னள் நீங்கும் இடத்து”
(When I am with the woman who wears her impeccable qualities as her ornaments, my body gets its life – but when she leaves me, I become lifeless)
“அவளில்லாமல் நானில்லை
நானில்லாமல் அவளில்லை”
The pallavi lines are just simplified versions of the three Kurals from காமத்துப்பால். வாலி just nails it transforming them into fun lyrics. Now for the rest of the song:
The theme of நலம்புனைந்துரைத்தல் continues in both the Charanams:
“கொடி மின்னல் போல் ஒரு பார்வை
மானோ மீனோ என்றிருந்தேன்
குயில் ஓசை போல் ஒரு வார்த்தை
குழலோ யாழோ என்றிருந்தேன்
நெஞ்சோடு நெஞ்சை சேர்த்தாள்
தீயோடு பஞ்சை சேர்த்தாள்
இன்று காதல் ஏக்கம் தந்தாள் சென்றாள்
(Love this line: she didn’t just make him love her – she made him love her so much that he perennially craves for her – “காதல் ஏக்கம் தந்தாள்”)
நாளை என் செய்வாளோ?
“கலை அன்னம் போலவள் தோற்றம்
இடையில் இடையோ கிடையாது
( Typical வாலி word play – first “இடை” means “mid portion” and second “இடை” implies her “hip”)
சிலை வண்ணம் போலவள் தேகம்
இதழில் மதுவோ குறையாது
என்னோடுதன்னை சேர்த்தாள்
தன்னோடு என்னை சேர்த்தாள்
இன்று காதல் ஏக்கம் தந்தாள் சென்றாள் நாளை என் செய்வாளோ”
A delightful song that showcases the beauty of love and திருக்குறள் at the same time.
