மௌனம்

Dear all,

Writing a love song must be the commonest situation faced by a movie lyricist. It must be an easy task then right? Pretty mundane and monotonous for the lyricists!!! What if there is a slight twist in the scene – would that make it more challenging? Let’s say the song is between a young couple on the first night after their marriage. It gives a bit more scope to the lyricist. The words should convey the shyness and the hesitancy as well as the desire to be with each other.
Let’s take it up a notch and say one of them is mute and can’t talk and is already feeling inferior and grossly inadequate in this relationship that has hardly begun. Now the onus is on the other partner to convey the romance, be sensitive to the partner’s emotions, and at the same time pep the partner up and convey that they are equal in every way. Wow- now that’s a heavy load to carry for any character and hence the burden then falls on the lyricist.

Such situations can only be imagined by very creative directors and only after having full faith in their lyricist and the music director. When each of them excel the other, the product becomes a timeless masterpiece. This week’s song is exactly that:

After listening to this song, I am sure you will realise why Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy were called “மெல்லலிசை மன்னர்கள்”!!!

Songs starts slow – relaxing you.
Pallavi starts and instantly Kannadasan seems to have an edge over MSV:

“மௌனமே பார்வையால் ஒரு
பாட்டுப் பாட வேண்டும்
நாணமே ஜாடையால் ஒரு
வார்த்தை பேச வேண்டும்”
( Since she can’t talk – he calls her “மௌனமே” and “நாணமே”). Brilliant imagination – Just a first ball six out of the park.
( “What if you can’t speak – your eyes can recite poetry “ he says).

PBS seems to remind the rest of this team that he is too on the running for the prize for the best performer – so smooth and pleasant. After consoling her for her inherent handicap, the man now treats her as an equal and expresses his desire:
“அல்லிக்கொடியே உன்தன்
முல்லை இதழும் – தேன்
ஆறு போலப் பொங்கி வர
வேண்டும் – வர வேண்டும்”

“அங்கம் தழுவும் வண்னத்
தங்க நகை போல் – என்னை
அள்ளிச் சூடிக் கொண்டு
விட வேண்டும் – என்னை
அள்ளிச் சூடிக்கொண்டு
விட வேண்டும் ம்…”
Just when Kannadasan and PBS seem to be secure, MSV uses the ending syllable “ம்” and extends it as a humming that is so soothing, reiterating his dominant position.

Kannadasan won’t accept defeat; he wants to surge past MSV and PBS to the finish line and hence packs a punch in the second Charanam:
“முத்துச் சரமே என்
பக்கம் இருந்தால்
வேறென்ன வார்த்தை சொல்ல
மொழி வேண்டும்”
“Even my speech is useless because If you are in front of me no words exist in any language to express my feelings for you” – What an expression to console a person feeling low?
“முன்னம் இருக்கும்
இந்த சின்ன முகத்தில்
பல
மொழிகள் பாடம் பெற வர
வேண்டும் – பல
மொழிகள் பாடம் பெற வர
வேண்டும் ம்…”
(In the next line he elevates her even higher “ In the beauty her face exudes, many languages can learn and create some new words to describe it”)
There is absolutely no need for her to speak a word!!!!

The song is over, but the situation, music, lyrics and singing keep reverberating for a long time.

A masterpiece by the entire team.
Well the real winner then is after all us the fortunate listeners – isn’t it ?
