This week I picked a song not only because it is a very romantic, fast paced bubbly song, but also because it brings out a facet of திருக்குறள் that a lot of us are unaware of. Almost everyone instinctively knows that திருக்குறள் is a book about the moral, ethical and righteous ways of life. It is a book known for its universality and transcends religions and cultures unlike most other similar books

Dear all,

“With age comes wisdom” they say. This week sharing a song that broke that norm. It was penned by a poet who was 35 years old but the song lyrics is very deep in its insight. The words are simple, but hit you hard. Cycle of life made elementary, but each element addressed with utmost thought. The poet who could do this was none other than கண்ணதாசன்.

Dear all,

Although the song this week may not be one several of you like, it was a huge hit at the time of its release and served as an anthem for several college goers.
What impressed me about this song is Kannadasan’s ability to get into the character’s mind and express the emotions so accurately. Despite having to write songs for similar scenarios time and time again, he almost always finds a unique angle to make his point. In this song he uses two interesting concepts to get his views across – “duality” and “root cause analysis”

Dear all,

Duet songs in movies often merely fill the gap and break monotony. Clever directors use it to move the story ahead. Some love duets are light and fun; some can impress you with their poetic beauty while others are just purely romantic. Can a love duet be fun, light, poetic, romantic and beyond all this, instruct and inspire you and serve as a song to pep you up when u feel low? And all this in a song that hardly lasts three and a half minutes? Isn’t it asking for a bit too much of the lyricist? Not really – if you ask கண்ணதாசன் to do it.

Dear all,
“Ecocriticism” is a word I learnt very recently. It is supposedly the application of ecological concepts to the study of literature. As I was intrigued and wondering how in the world could somebody even get the idea to connect literature with ecology, stumbled across தமிழ் poetry being be a much older and organised predecessor of this concept. The term “ecocriticism” now merely seems to be an old wine in a new bottle.
