A Doctor’s Verse

My world, My words.

பாரதி வரிகள் – 6

This week picked a song that is relatively light and easy to comprehend, but still reveals intense love and showcases the vast expanse of Bharathi’s imagination. பாரதி as always uses astonishing adjectives and finds new words to express his emotions and in the process educates us immensely. He glorifies Kannamma using analogies of the highest order and finds her extremely irresistible.

I picked the version from the movie “கண்டு கொண்டேன் கண்டு கொண்டேன்.”

பாரதி வரிகள் – 5

Having celebrated Bharathiyar’s birthday just two days ago, wanted to pause the கண்ணம்மா series this week and write about a song that vividly showcases the great human and thinker he was. He was way ahead of his time in his thinking and vision.

The song is “ நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்தே” and I picked the version from the movie “வருமையின் நிறம் சிகப்பு” purely for the musical delight it is and the expressive voice of SPB.

பாரதி வரிகள் – 4

This week picked a பாரதி song that is lighter yet equally melodious in tune and potent in impact compared to the last one.

In this song பாரதி looks at கண்ணம்மா as his equal and composes this song imagining spending a pleasant time with her. He enjoys her company and feels elevated because of her love. In this happy mood he expresses the intensity of his love by his powerful words and strong adjectives.

பாரதி வரிகள் – 3

This week picked a பாரதி song that always fascinated me. A song so dense in its expression of his love and admiration for கண்ணம்மா. A song where Bharathi’s imagination soars high and broad as he expresses his relationship with கண்ணம்மா with several distinctive metaphors.

பாரதி வரிகள் – 2

Bharathiyar could bring in wide range of emotions in his relationships with கண்ணன் and கண்ணம்மா. This week picked another பாரதியார் song that conveys love, frustration and even anger. He writes as a woman falling in love with கண்ணன்.

பாரதி வரிகள் – 1

After nearly three months of writing about Vaali and his lyrics, thought will spotlight a poet who revolutionised Tamil literature. He created an aura by the unfathomable scale of his thoughts, the forwardness of his ideas, the use of words that wielded power, the expression of unfiltered raw emotion, the range of themes and the purity of his compositions. His work was a huge milestone in the evolution of Tamil literature. Talking about none other than சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார்

வாலி – 11

this week wanted to bring out an excellent example of his adaptability using two classic songs. Both have many things in common although they are separated by almost quarter of a century!!!. Both are from the same genre – both sung by a woman who yearns for the attention and love of her desired man, both anxious in the waiting and excited by the prospect of his potential reciprocation, MSV involved with both and sung by two different legendary singers. One factor unifying all the above was the nativity and emotions brought about by வாலி lyrics.

வாலி – 10

I picked this song to highlight Vaali’s unspoken ability to pen profound thoughts in plain words.  This song is sung by the hero to a little girl. வாலி hence uses words that are comprehensible by a 10 year old but creates a masterpiece that is dense in impact and deep in meaning.

வாலி – 9

This week selected a song that was way ahead of its time in every aspect. Picked a song from the movie “குழந்தையும் தெய்வமும்”  – selected this over the more popular song from the same movie “அன்புள்ள மான் விழியே” for its sheer novelty and soothing melody. The song is about a couple reminiscing their falling for each other, relishing each other’s company and the joy the evening together brings about.

வாலி – 8

This week picked a song that captures and controls your senses and makes you feel the emotions. Will use this song to deliberately highlight three legends who have competed to better each other, in the end giving us a song of the highest caliber. The song is from the movie “அக்னி சாட்சி”.
