A Doctor’s Verse
My world, My words.

Dear all,
This week picked a song for its pure lyrical brilliance and the genius behind it.
Was very keen to write up this song for several reasons:
1. Usually songs have one or two phrases – at best a couple sentences that awe us. In this song almost every sentence makes us pause and revisit it in astonishment. ஒரே பாடலில் எவ்வளவு வளமான சொற்கள், வார்த்தைகள் !!!!
2. Kannadasan uses adjectives that just don’t occur to a common man or a run of the mill lyricist and in the process as always showcases the depth and beauty of தமிழ்.

Songs make an impression on us because of their ability to incite a strong response within us or their lyrical beauty or their musical value. Kannadasan songs often have all the above attributes making them very special.

Some songs express emotions and thoughts so accurately and hence they make you believe it was written with your situation in mind. Kannadasan has the unique ability to use words, easily understandable by everybody and still create a song that drives home the message with clarity and force. Picked a song this week that exemplifies this ability explicitly.

A mark of a great lyricist is to accurately depict the views of the character he writes the song for with clarity and simplicity. This week wanted to bring up a song with perspectives most people may not agree with (and hence may not like my song selection too). But it is precisely this unapologetic audacious writing of Kavignar that impressed me. One can see his personal life and views spilling over into the song and that makes his writing more convincing and forceful.

Dear all,
Director Sridhar, MSV and Kannadasan have always produced songs that are treasures. MSV credits it to their teamwork where each one inspired the other. This particular song was inspired by director Sridhar. When the trio sat for composing the song for the movie “வெண்ணிற ஆடை”, Sridhar narrated the context of a young ebullient girl expressing her love to the man she loves. Sridhar then enacted the scene biting his finger nails shyly and walking with a jump in each step depicting the excitement of the young girl.

Dear all,
Some songs have the capacity to attract you in the first hearing. It’s beauty captures you and gets ingrained into you. Subconsciously your mind hums the song for no particular reason and enjoys the warmth it brings within you. This week writing up a song that has such an effect on me.

Dear all,
It’s quite common for a song to express views, perspectives or emotions of two characters. Can a song possibly speak about every character in that movie and sum up the plot providing insights into their plight and thoughts? Yes (ONLY) if Kannadasan writes it!!!!

Dear all,
Sometimes a random flicker inspires something extraordinary and today’s song is one that was inspired by a nondescript event but became a landmark composition in the history of Tamil cinema.

Dear all,
Very rarely, a film has so many beautiful songs that often one among them despite being brilliant by itself doesn’t get the due attention it rightfully deserves. This week highlighting the lyrics of such a song.
After director Sridhar’s much anticipated musical “கலை கோவில்” flopped big time, the Chitralaya group wanted to make a romantic comedy movie. Sridhar and his close associate Gopu were driving down the beach road in Chennai bouncing ideas and together created the outline of a movie that became a timeless classic – “காதலிக்க நேரமில்லை”.
