The various dimensions of love – Part VI – Faith
Dear all.
Bharathiyar allegedly wrote 12 “கண்ணம்மா” songs – 7 songs seeing her as his lover, 3 songs with his wife Chellamma in mind, 1 song visualising her as his child and one as his family deity. I have picked the song titled “கண்ணம்மா என் குல தெய்வம்” for this week.
We all have had a rough rocky year and badly want the next year to be positive in every way. Being the last write up of this year, I picked this song because it communicates everything all of us would want for ourselves and wish for every one as well in the coming year.
I have used the version sung by IR himself from the movie “பாரதி” – his deep husky voice brings the right emotions and wrings your heart the moment he starts with his humming.
In the first line பாரதி just surrenders to his GODDESS கண்ணம்மா:
He then belittles himself for his ignoble thoughts, but seeks complete relief from his own worries:
Love the line “என்னை கவலைகள் தின்ன தகாதென..- My worries should not eat or engulf me” – beautifully put!!!.
In the next line he exposes his shortcomings as an average human, again showcasing how secure he is with himself and seeks redemption:
Poverty
Befriend
“Poverty of thoughts and fear have befriended my mind and made me their home, please kill those traits and eradicate them from me”
“Rather than suffering from thoughts and consequences of my actions, please let me have fulfilment in performing tasks destined by you”
After completely surrendering to Kannamma for salvation, his best wishes then follow:
“No distress or sorrow from now on
No exhaustion of mind or body from now on
No losses or failures from now on”
Look how carefully பாரதி picks his words:
He didn’t say “ நல்லது நடத்துக” which can become an one time event. He says “நல்லது நாட்டுக” – Establish the good (sustain it). Similarly not “ தீமையை போக்குக” – which again can be an one time thing. Instead he uses “தீமையை ஓட்டுக” – Chase the bad away perpetually. He wants the character and the societal change to be permanent – not a transient one. Precise and pure in his thoughts!!!!
பாரதி finishes strong with his lines and I borrow them here to wish that and everything this song seeks, for all of us in the coming year(s):
“Let righteousness grow and expand by means of love
Let the good prevail and the bad perish.”
Wishing you all a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous new year.
