Dear all,

Some songs are just meant to be exactly the way they are – the tune perfect, the orchestration heavenly, lyrics precise, acting very subtle and the singing exact, all of which amalgamate to bring the desired emotions.

Two adolescents seem to be attracted to each other. Their age making them both a bit weary and excited at the same time about their feelings. Their heart yearns for one another, not knowing what the other feels. There is hope and anticipation that is overshadowed by the thick layer of pain that stems from this uncertainty. The tune, orchestration, lyrics and singing should bring this mood within us. Not a simple task – but the team pulls it off flawlessly.
Movie:
The song written by Gangai Amaran and composed by the one and only IR.

Malaysia Vasudevan always gives you the feeling that he was born and destined to sing certain songs. Despite SPB and Yesudas being more accomplished, certain songs of Malaysia Vasudevan, can’t be imagined in their voices- அள்ளி தந்த பூமி; பூவே இளைய பூவே; வா வா வசந்சமே – just to name a few. For a singer who has a deep masculine voice, in this song Malaysia Vasudevan delivers this song in a unique tone – a combination of nose, throat and abdomen. On careful listening one can hear all three components at various places – just brilliant stuff!!!

The pallavi starts with a solo flute and then the guitar strums building the mood. The lyrics seems to be about nature in general, but in the context of the movie they seem to convey the longing the infatuation of the teen brings:

(referring to their mutual longing)
(The humming seems to console them trying to calm their mind)
(The two young hearts referred to as

The first interlude is brilliant- IR first uses chorus humming as his main instrument and then brings in his solo violin in stark contrast – pure genius!!!. He then makes his violin talk – it has a randomness to it and yet is definite and meticulous.

Look how Gangai Amaran now links his thoughts on nature to the pining within the two hearts:
(மெல்லிசை உணர்வுகள் – just a beautiful phrase for their infatuation)

What starts of as a sober song is turned into a happy one by IR at the second interlude – the mood changes slowly but surely:

The best lines of the song follow:

The movie was directed by debutants பாரதி-வாசு (சந்தான பாரதி; P. வாசு) both of whom became popular directors in later years. Their budget for this movie was 5 Lakhs. IR told them he will collect his remuneration after his work was completed giving the director duo a lot of anxious months (wondering how much he would charge) only to finally to tell them he wouldn’t charge them a pie – Priceless songs indeed!!!!

Except for IR, all others were relatively newbies – a project where the sum was far greater than the parts!!!!
